At the Hands of Virtual Gods

Humanity is extinct. In the wake of total ecological destruction, humanity thought to escape by sealing everyone into bunkers and allowing them to live in a virtual world until they could recover. The recovery never came, and thus humans rotted away in their virtual coffins. With no hope, the last of humanity wander their virtual space, waiting for to randomly “log out”. Rowan is no different, biding his time playing games. That is, until one day he encounters a shop keeper NPC who randomly became sapient. Is this a spark of hope for humanity, or just another thing to waste time until the inevitable?
