What Happens When Dad Leaves, and What Happens in the Treehouse depict scenes of child abuse, hopeless lose/lose situations, and very bad parenting. You do not need to read these stories to truly understand Fred’s character or how he functions in other areas of the story. The short version is Paul (dad) leaves, Wanda is an awful mother, Mark falls out of a treehouse, and Wanda continues to be the fucking worst.
